Is the Ketogenic Diet the Key to Unlocking Optimal Health?

The Ketogenic diet has become one of the most popular diets that are spreading around today. Many low-carb dieters have adopted the Ketogenic lifestyle to experience its health benefits. So what is this Ketogenic Diet and what are its health benefits?

The Ketogenic Diet

The ketogenic diet is a meal plan that is designed for your cells to use your body’s stored fat for fuel instead of glucose. It consists of consuming healthy fats, little carbohydrates, and moderate protein foods. Some Ketogenic diets allow low sugar fruits, such as berries and lemons. Examples of healthy fats are MCT oil, ghee, coconut butter, coconut oil, olive oil, avocado, and salmon. The focus of meal planning is on nutrient value, not caloric intake.

Who developed the Ketogenic meal plan?

The ketogenic meal plan was formulated by Dr. Russell Wilder. This treatment was popular in the 1920s and ’30s, to help treat children with epileptic seizures. Dr. Wilder observed a healing effect on the brain cells when the body used ketones as cellular fuel. In recent years the ketogenic lifestyle has become more popular and many people have noticed many benefits which include: improved insulin sensitivity, and improved hormonal condition such as Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), reduced risk of heart disease, reduced risk of type two diabetes, reduced triglycerides, increase fat burning, decrease in appetite, reduced cancer, improved brain function, decrease inflammation, increased longevity, gained energy, and improved sleep. Although exercise is beneficial to any diet and lifestyle, it is not necessary to experience the benefits of the ketogenic diet. Before your body can experience the benefits of the Ketogenic Meal Plan it must be in a state of ketosis.

What is ketosis?

Ketosis is a state of the body when glucose is absent, and the body starts to burn fat as ketones are produced. Ketones are produced by the liver and used as an energy source when glucose is not readily available. When ketone levels rise in the blood you enter a state of ketosis and that is when your body begins to use fat for fuel source instead of glucose. Checking your ketone and glucose with a test meter can help you reach ketosis. The ketogenic diet is a very effective way to access your stored fat and eliminate excess body fat to obtain healthy body weight and the key to unlocking optimal health. So, is this a ketogenic lifestyle for you? Give it a try, I love to hear about your results.
